Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings through the ground. Proper sealing of foundations and floor slabs is therefore essential, especially in areas with elevated radon concentrations.

IKO radon Barrier is a high-performance bituminous membrane that protects buildings against radon gas while providing durable waterproofing for below-ground structures. What can you do against radon?

The measures required to protect against radon depend on whether the building is existing or newly constructed. In both cases, the objective is the same: to prevent radon gas from entering the building through the foundations or floor slab.

Existing housing
In existing buildings, radon levels can be reduced by:

  • Sealing the building’s floor slab.
  • Venting radon by improving the ventilation of crawl spaces or basements.
  • Repairing cracks and joints in the foundation.

New housing
For new-build projects, prevention is the most effective approach. In radon-prone areas, it is recommended to install a radon-proof membrane such as IKO radon Barrier beneath the floor slab or basement structure during construction. This prevents radon gas from entering the building later, eliminating the need for costly remedial work afterwards.

What is radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas formed from uranium. The gas is colourless and odourless. In high concentrations this gas can be damaging to our health. It damages the lungs and can lead in the long term to lung cancer.

Where do we find radon?
The gas can enter your home through cracks, joints in the wall, cracks in the floor, crawlspace or cellar or via sanitary pipes.
